Suitable and AlphaLab
AlphaLab, a nationally ranked, Pittsburgh based startup accelerator, has been home to Suitable since January 2015. AlphaLab’s focus is launching innovative startups successfully within a small timeframe. Throughout the year AlphaLab selects 6-8 companies to receive investments, mentorship, and office space. AlphaLab’s small class size ensures each startup the critical interaction needed for success. During AlphaLab’s 20-week program it prepares participants for AlphaLab Demo Day by providing constructive feedback and achieving product-market fit. This demo day is the opportunity at the end of these 20 weeks to present our company to national investors and press.
Suitable is one of seven startups that received a $25,000 investment upon entering AlphaLab. From over 150 applicants we were selected based AlphaLab’s three criteria: our ability to solve the market’s problem, the quality of our team, and our ability to progress rapidly. AlphaLab provides our team with a broad mentoring network, which includes successful former AlphaLab participants, educational sessions with startup experts, and a competitive workspace environment.
Each week Suitable participates in AlphaLab’s educational sessions. In these sessions a speaker provides exclusive insight to the AlphaLab teams about their areas of expertise. The teams are also given the opportunity to have one-on-one time with these experts during office-hours. Along with education sessions, AlphaLab also provides its startups with networking events that help create indispensable contacts from not only Pittsburgh, but across the nation.
Coming into AlphaLab, we were already piloting our online platform with Dick’s Sporting Goods, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pitt Business, and Community College of Allegheny County’s business program with the help of Thrill Mill. Thrill Mill is the initial incubator that helped bring our vision to life. Thrill Mill gave us the guidance, mentorship, and connections we needed to jumpstart our company and get our pilot initiated.
Although we have great relationships with our pilot employers and schools, AlphaLab is providing us with knowledge and support we need to successfully expand to other universities and large corporations. With AlphaLab’s help, we will be rolling out our platform to more students at Pitt’s nursing and engineering schools and Community College of Allegheny County by Fall Semester 2015.
